Artrageous Weekend
Sat.-Sun., Sept. 6-7: Wausau’s big art weekend is here! The main event is the Festival of Arts, where downtown Wausau becomes a juried art show with more than 100 artists, and offers a great opportunity for folks to add new art to their collection. Enjoy the festival atmosphere and check out some of the amazing talent on display, plus food trucks, music and more. Learn more, see a schedule of performances and more here. But that’s not all this weekend…
The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum will host the annual Birds in Art exhibition with bird art from some of the best artists around the country (it’s the 50th one!), and will feature live workshops and other events to celebrate. Plenty going on all day Saturday for opening day but one recommendation: Watch the artists at work at the museum starting at 10:45 am. See the full Birds in Art event lineup for Saturday here.
Also going on at the same time are plenty of workshops at the Center for the Visual Arts, Art in the Park with plenty of affordable art and craft pieces in East Gate Hall and the Exhibition Building, and you can check out the Rise Up makerspace downtown, and maybe create something yourself. Also new this year is an art-inspired fun run at 9:30 am Sunday that supports the CVA.
WMOCA Open Mic Night
Monday, Sept. 8: One of the things we have noticed at The Wausonian is the number of new events that have been springing up at the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art. As the museum builds its new space, new events are popping up and this is one of them. WMOCA is hosting an open mic night Blues and Brews should be a fun time. Come on down and bring your instrument to jam along (all levels welcome) or just take in the tunes with a pint at this event. 6-8 pm. Free, cash bar available. Check out the event page for more.
Bradley Sperger
Sunday, Sept. 7: Bradley Sperger is especially skilled at the art of being a one-man band - it’s truly a joy to watch him build a song, adding each layer to the tune one piece at a time. His bluesy-mixed-with-modern style is always a joy to listen to, and he has some great recordings to his name. Check out Sperger at The Garage, one of Wausau’s music hotspots. Noon. See the event page for more. (And, if you’re looking for something more, The Garage is also hosting Soul Whiskey at 7 pm.
Women, Wine and Wellness
Monday, Sept. 8: The Milk Merchant has continued the tradition of bringing delicious and rare cheeses to the Wausau area. And in this event, the cheese store is partnering with Skinnovations to bring an evening of wine, cheese and women’s wellness. The entry fee gets participants a seasonal mocktail, cocktail or wine, some healthy bites from Chef Maggie and plenty of information about helping your skin age healthy. Ask lots of questions, enjoy the treats and finish with a meditation. $15. 5:30 pm-7:30 pm. Check out the event page for more and to register.
BluezDriver
Friday, Sept. 5: One of the cool things about musicians from the younger generations is that they seem to like a variety of genres, and that means we’re seeing a variety of original music. BluezDriver is one of those bands, bringing a new twist on the genre of blues rock. Much like The Tamaracks, this band brings hard-driving, distorted blues rock with fast and soulful riffs. The band is a great addition to the local scene and you can check them out at The Office. 6 pm. Check out the event page for more.
Movie Under the Stars: Moana 2
Friday, Sept. 5: Just when you thought the summer fun for the kiddos was over, it turns out there are still some options! And thanks to some weather delays, you can come bring your kids to Kronenwetter to get them some movie time outdoors this Friday. Held at Friendship Park in Kronenwetter, the village will be showing Moana 2 on the big screen. Plus free raffles! Bring your own drinks and snacks and, since this is Wisconsin, bug spray. 6:30 pm. Check out the event page for more.
Jason Dea West (w/ Nora Jean)
Wednesday, Sept. 3: Sometimes you just want some good old-fashioned Americana, and Jason Dea West, armed with a resonator guitar and harmonica skills, is the guy to provide it. His voice seems perfectly cut in stone for Americana with a slight Dylan-eque edge to it. West will come to perform at Isherwood Hall in Plover to close out its summer series of concerts. West will be joined by Nora Jean. 7 pm. $15. Bring your own drinks and picnic items. See the event page for more.
Upcoming
Here Come the Mummies
Saturday, Sept. 20: Although I typically reserve this spot for shows I think are likely to sell out early, Here Come the Mummies promises to be a big show and I think tickets will start flying pretty soon. One of the more unique acts in the world of music (I mean, they dress up like mummies and play some gnarly horn-driven funk), Here Come the Mummies have shared the stage with Al Green, KC and the Sunshine Band, Cheap Trick and many more; been a regular on the Bob and Tom Show, played in Super Bowl Village and highlighted festivals such as Summerfest. While the setup might sound gimmicky, the Mummies are exceptionally talented and their set is tight. (They also bring a ton of humor to their songs.) 7:30 pm. $58-78. Check out the event page for more.
