Candlelight Snowshoe Hike
Saturday, Jan. 10: Friends of Rib Mountain usually runs these wonderful snowshoe hikes a couple of times per year when weather permits - and this year certainly has seen enough snow! The mountain hikes are great exercise and very scenic. Bring your own snowshoes if you have them, but they also have snowshoes for folks to borrow — Friends officials say they’ve introduced hundreds of people to the sport. Meet at the Friends Gathering Space just past the parks office toward the top of the mountain. They suggest bringing headlamps and flashlights as well. Hang out in the Friends Gathering Space afterward to enjoy hot chocolate by the fireplace or hang out outside to roast marshmallows by the campfire. Check with Friends of Rib Mountain on Facebook to get an update on conditions. 6 pm. See the event page for more.
BONUS: Also for you Nordic Ski fans, the Skekkevik Classic race is this Saturday at Nine Mile Forest. Keep an eye on conditions for both of these events.
Holistic Wellness Fair
Saturday, Jan. 10: If you are one of those free spirit types who love alternative methods of healing and rejuvenating, this is your jam. Come check out the healers, vendors and artisans at this Holistic Wellness Fair at Sconni’s. This is part of the Kindred Spirits Saturday monthly series of events and this Saturday is your day to visit with healers, psychic readers, unique vendors and receive a free Magik [sic] bag. Free admission. 11 am-3 pm. See the event page for more.
Sleigh Rides
Sunday, Jan. 11: Tis the season, when the holidays are over and there is still plenty of winter left. These sleigh rides at Willow Springs Gardens should help fill the gap in things to do over the winter. Intended for smaller groups of eight or fewer, come enjoy a horse-driven sleigh ride through the scenic woods at Willow Springs Gardens and enjoy a hot drink by a campfire. Total time in the woods is about 1 1/2 hours. Enjoy an optional soup buffet afterward. $26 per person, $15 for just the ride. See the event poster for more details.
Kinky Boots
Tues.-Wed., Jan. 13-14: You might have already seen the promotion around town. Those long, thigh-high red boots have been making their way to various notable figures in Wausau. That’s to promote the upcoming Tony Award-winning musical coming to the Grand Theater. Kinky Boots is the story of Charlie, who is set to inherit his father’s failing shoe factory, and Lola, a fabulous entertainer. The unlikely pair, it turns out, has much more in common than it might seem. With a Tony Award-winning score by Cyndi Lauper, you really can’t go wrong with this production. 7:30 pm on Jan. 13; 7 pm on Jan. 14. $84-$146. See the event page for more.
Jazz Night with CWM Jazz Ensemble
Tuesday, Jan. 13: Perhaps The Bar — Wausau isn’t where you would normally expect to go to find jazz, but it is this Tuesday! The CWM Jazz Ensemble will be filling the bar with the cool sounds of jazz. And though I normally don’t include this kind of thing, the bar is sweetening the pot with some pretty good food and drink specials. If you’re looking for something a little different, this isn’t a bad option. 7 pm. Free. Check out the event page for more.
Un-Broken: 10-Year Anniversary Show
Saturday, Jan. 10: Many of you probably know this by now — but Q&Z shows tends to run heavy. Hard rock and harder, into the realm of death metal and such. And Un-Broken is pretty heavy — think hard-driving distorted guitars and a mix of melodic vocals and that metal growl. Also on this bill will be Constance, playing its last show ever. And with Embers Rise, Abaddon’s End and Inherit the Earth on the bill, this should be one heck of a head-banging show. 5:30 pm. $12.51. See the event page for more.

Upcoming
Chloe Kimes
Saturday, Jan. 24: This Nashville-based country-folk singer coming to Lamplight Sessions soon has Midwest roots, having grown up in Michigan. Chloe Kimes’s 2022 debut album was named a WYCE Radio Listener's Choice Album of the Year, which earned her a spot on NPR’s Music's Top Ten Nashville Artists on the Rise. It’s easy to see why. Her sound has the catchiness of a good pop song but with the country twang fans of the genre expect. The songwriting is clever, something the best of country music songwriting achieves. Opening for her is Sophie Coyote. 7 pm. $33.76. See the event page for more.
