Concert OFF the Square: HYDE (Weston)
Wednesday, Aug. 20: That’s right, no typo - this week’s concert is not on the typical 400 Block square - it’s in Weston at Kennedy Park. (Or at Rothschild Pavilion if the Wednesday rain streak continues.) Party band Hyde will be highlighting this Weston version of the Concerts on the Square, all at Kennedy Park, which is currently undergoing a major renovation. According to the map, the stage will be at the corner of Alderson St. and Neupert Ave., with the crowd facing Neupert. Parking is along Alta Verde Street and the western end of Neupert. 6 pm. Check out the event page for more.
Righteous Brothers
Thursday, Aug. 21: We sent you this one early, thinking it would sell out, and it’s pretty darned close. If you’ve ever lost that loving feeling, you know what band I’m talking about. The Righteous Brothers, originally formed by Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield in 1963, but now comprised of Medley and Bucky Heard, has been around for more than sixty years. They’re responsible for numerous hits, including “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling,” “Just Once in My Life,” and their cover of “Unchained Melody” (which really blew up after it appeared in 1990’s Ghost). This is their farewell tour, so if you’re a fan of The Righteous Brothers you’re not going to want to miss out on this one. $68-$104. 7:30 pm. See the event page for tickets and more details.
Wausau Night Market
Thursday, Aug. 21: You know summer is coming to a close when the last Night Market of the season hits. Come on down to downtown Third Street for a night of fun with dozens of local vendors while the downtown area becomes an impromptu market during the evening hours, when people can actually attend. Think everything from candles to baked goods to scented oils to wearables — plus live music, sidewalk dining and all kinds of other downtown fun. Largely on Third Street downtown from 5-9 pm. See the event page for more.
Old Fashioned Downtown Tour
Saturday, Aug. 23: I love history, and I love Old-Fashioneds (not that I let myself have them very often) so this event is basically right up my alley. Tour several of downtown Wausau’s historic buildings and find out how they were originally used (especially during the booming 20s and the prohibition era that followed) while sampling Old-Fashioneds or their spirit-free alternatives at each stop. What a great chance to learn some local history and to enjoy an afternoon cocktail. Tours at 2 pm and 4 pm. $35. See the event page for more details and to purchase tickets.
Mead Kite Festival
Saturday, Aug. 23: Flying in a plane can be out of reach for many people, but one easy way to experience the magic of flight is to fly a kite. There’s something about assembling a kite and seeing it aloft in the air that always brings a smile to people’s faces. And even more fun are the stunt kites, with two lines with handles allowing a user to soar fast across the horizon or do loops and other tricks. Mead’s kite festival is a celebration of kites, with plenty of kite flying, including participants bringing their own kites. Plus food trucks to help you make a day of it. Free. 11 am-3 pm. Check out the event page for more.
Hope in the Park: Anne Wilson
Sunday, Aug. 24: If anyone fit the term “rising star,” it would be Anne Wilson. The Nashville artist already snagged herself a Grammy nomination with her debut 2022 album, “My Jesus,” and she’s working on bending genres in country and other styles. Her voice is powerful, deep and has an edge to it one would expect of someone much older and more experienced. This free show at Marathon Park is one to see if you’re a fan of country and pop, or just want to see someone on their rise up the charts. 4 pm. Preferred seating is sold out, but the rest of the grandstand or grass area is free. Check out the event page for more.
Tails and Ales
Saturday, Aug. 23: OK, total honesty hour: I am one of those annoying people who wants to take their dog everywhere. So dog-themed events are great in my book! This annual event celebrates doggies and they’re allowed to join you as you check out the Sawmill Brewing Company with beer (duh), food, adoptable dogs, dog lick art, doggie pools, raffles and more. Dogs are allowed to come with you on their leash. 2-7 pm. Check out the event page for more details. (And if that’s not enough, check out the dog event at Uncommon Pints, linked in our In Brief section.)
Mia Brown Street Jam
Thursday, Aug. 21: If you guys have read The Wausonian a while, you know who Mia Brown is. For those who don’t, the Wausau-native Brown has a powerful voice and is signed to a Nashville recording label. Check her out with this street jam starting at 6 pm, and stick around for the open mic session that follows at 8 pm. Check out the event page.
