Evercon
Fri.-Sun., March 6-8: The Evercon Gaming Convention has evolved from a small gathering at D.C. Everest Junior High into a huge event at the Central Wisconsin Expo and Convention Center. Not only that, but while gaming — including tabletop games, collectible card games and video games — is still the main focus of the event, it’s grown to include all forms of geekhood. Comic books, anime, manga, live action roleplaying and so much more. If you’re a nerd at heart, this is where you’ll be this weekend. $60 for the full weekend, $35 Friday, $45 Saturday, $30 Sunday, special rates for kids. See the event page for full details.
Celtic Angels Ireland
Thursday, March 5: If you can’t get enough of performances like Riverdance, Celtic Angels Ireland should be on your radar. Filled with colorful costumes, whimsical sets and plenty of Celtic song, dance and legend, Celtic Angels Ireland is a visual and auditory feast, especially for fans of the genre. And for those who really want to get into the spirit thing, there is a separate Irish dinner catered by The Mint Cafe to get you in the mood for the show. 7:30 pm. $39-$64. Check out the event page here.
Daddy Daughter Dance
Friday, March 6: Willow Springs Gardens has really focused on family events, and this event is right in line with that trend. The Father Daughter Dance will feature a DJ dance party, a photograph backdrop, mac and cheese with a pizza buffet, desserts, punch, milk and cider. The spots are limited, so if you’re a dad who wants a fun event to take your daughter to, this is a good bet. 5:30-9:30 pm. $45 for one dad and daughter, additional children $10. See the event page for more.
Alexander Eischweiler: Architects Who Built Wausau
Saturday, March 7: The Friends of Wausau Historic Landmarks has actually been doing a series of these lectures during the winter months about the architects who helped shape Wausau — and this presentation on architect Alexander Eischweiler at the Marathon County Public Library Community Room is actually the third in the series. Eischweiler is responsible for some interesting homes in Wausau including 522 McIndoe Street and and the D.C. Everest Home, both in the city’s historic districts. They’re very unique mansions, more modern than many of the Victorian homes in the city’s historic districts, and you can learn more about them in this series. 1:30 pm. See the event page for more details.
BeaterCross snowmobile races
Saturday, March 7: There’s nothing quite like the whining roar of snowmobile engines as the sleds race for position. In case you’re not familiar with why it might be called a “beatercross,” it’s because racers will be grabbing their old beat-up sleds to race on conditions that, this late in the season, are less than ideal. Just because the snow is starting to disappear doesn’t mean you can’t spend a day watching snowmobile racing at the Nutterville Snow Nutz Snowmobile Club grounds. $15 general admission, 12 and under free. Gates open at 7 am, racing starts at 10 am. See the event page for more.
Slow Looking: A Guided Experience
Thursday, March 5: If art and culture are more your speed, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum has a pretty cool event coming up. Slow down and enjoy the museum’s exhibits during this guided, one-hour looking session. You don’t have to be an art aficionado to enjoy this exhibit — event organizers say just come with an open mind and a willingness to look a little deeper at the art exhibits and take in the details. 5:30 pm. See the event page for more.
Snow White
Saturday, March 7: The Central Wisconsin School of Ballet is one of those institutions that’s been a stalwart in the Wausau area and doesn’t get the love it deserves. A good way to go out and show it some love is checking out this performance of Snow White. Watch the talented ballerinas of CWSO take on the ballet version of this classic fairy tale. But there’s even more than just the show. Enjoy the Storybook Fair before the show, and meet the characters afterward! 1 pm and 5 pm. $31 adults, $27 students. See the event page for more.
Brad Emanuel
Friday, March 6: Brad Emanuel has been a local favorite for some time - he’s been voted best local musician in annual reader surveys for several years now. Emanuel has a voice of gold, knows how to work a crowd and always creates a fun party environment. Here he’s joined by his full band, guaranteed to fill The Garage, one of Wausau’s main music venues, with sound and fun. 8 pm. See the event page for more.
