Former Town of Bergen clerk Gloriann Doyle sentenced | Wausau area crime roundup
Plus The Wausonian discovered clues as to why the Tyler Briggs case was dismissed locally

I don’t plan on consistently doing a crime roundup, but this week in particular there seemed to be so much crime news that instead of adding even more to the Weekly Wausonian, which was already bursting at the seams this week, I decided to pull these stories into their own post.
The former Town of Bergen Clerk, Gloriann Doyle, was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to six felony charges related to theft, forgery and misconduct in office.
Doyle, 65, will serve four years behind bars in prison, with another two years on extended supervision for the initial theft charge of more than $100,000. Other charges carried lesser sentences that will run concurrent to that charge (meaning she essentially serves the other sentences at the same time, which is the most common scenario).
Prosecutors last March alleged Doyle stole from the town almost immediately after becoming its clerk in 2024. The town’s chairman told investigators it started with an unauthorized purchase of computer repair services, according to court records. The chairman’s wife suggested he look at the town’s finances, according to the criminal complaint.
Worse, prosecutors say, Doyle stole the money in order to pay back funds she had stolen from the non-profit she worked at, the Wisconsin Valley Art Association.
Doyle pleaded guilty to the charges back in August.
The charges came as Doyle was on the ballot for town Clerk. Another candidate, Amy Veenendaal, who was appointed to replace Doyle following her arrest, successfully ran a write-in campaign.
Doyle as part of her sentence will also pay $133,233 to the town of Bergen in restitution and $86,721 to the Wisconsin Valley Arts organization. The judge tacked on a 10% surcharge to the restitution.
Wausau man indicted on federal meth charges; local case dismissed
A Wausau man is facing years in prison after being indicted on federal charges related to the distribution of methamphetamines.
According to reports, Briggs was arrested in January after he brought more than 500 grams of meth into Wausau.
But the new charges came after a local case was dismissed for reasons that haven’t yet been reported by local news media. The Wausonian learned more from the court records.
