Greenhouse given one-year deadline | Wausau news

A new greenhouse project proposed for a former chemical plant now has a new condition: occupy the space within one year.
The city’s Economic Development Committee Tuesday approved those among other terms for Infused, a greenhouse/herb/teahouse/event space planned for the former Wausau Chemical building along the riverfront.
Wausau resident and eye doctor Mathew Aschbrenner proposed the project last month, offering to buy the building for $40,000 and invest $250,000 into the project. Though better than most development projects, in which developers typically want property for free plus incentives, the proposal brought some pushback from some council members because they believed the price for the property should be higher.
City Economic Development Manager Randy Fifrick says completing the project within a year shouldn’t be a problem, but the timeline builds in a cushion in case of supply chain issues.

Police are seeking information about a rather unusual necklace heist last month. Surveillance video shows a woman in an SUV call over another woman, take a cheap necklace and place it on the woman, and use that as a way to unclasp the rather expensive necklace the victim was wearing and drive off with it. Anyone with information on the crime, which happened in the 800 block of S. 3rd Avenue, should contact Officer Karlen at 715-261-7908.
The Wausau Chamber of Commerce is selling its office spaces as the organization plans to move into the old depot on Washington Street. The move puts it near the former WPS building, which the Chamber hopes to turn into an innovation station that businesses and non-profits can rent out.
The Wausau School Board has given former board member Ka Lo a deadline of July 15 to officially resign. Lo announced late last month in a press release that she was resigning but never sent an actual resignation letter, preventing the board from replacing her due to state law. A district spokesperson says the deadline will allow them to fill the position.
Around the metro
Construction is underway on the first Caribou Coffee location in central Wisconsin. Work began recently at Cutoff Road and Schofield Avenue in Weston, kitty-corner from Target. The location will be drive-through only.
Everest Metro Police are seeking the whereabouts of a 61-year-old Schofield woman. Police say Sheila Sigmund disappeared from Schofield June 21. Sigmund has died red-orange hair and is known to frequent the Wausau area, but otherwise nothing is known about where she might have gone. Anyone with information should call Everest Metro Police at 715-359-4202.

Saturday, July 9: I love eating ice cream and I love riding bicycles. So that makes Tour de Briq pretty much the perfect event. Ride between two, three, four or all five Briq’s locations, receiving free ice cream as you ride. The event is a fundraiser for Cycling Without Age, which uses special tri-shaw bikes to give elderly and disabled folks bicycle rides, so donate early and often. Rides range from 18 miles to quite a bit longer for the five-stop ride so plan accordingly. Registration at 11:30 am, long rides leave at noon; shorter rides leave at 12:30 and 1 pm. Thursday, July 7: Pizza on the farm/orchard/gardens is starting to become a common thing these days, and for good reason. There is something about enjoying pizza and an adult beverage in the open air with your friends and/or family. Rocky Ridge is one of the newer entries in this category, and starting at 5:30 pm you can enjoy their pizza buffet in the orchard and listen to the bluegrass stylings of 18 Strings, a folk, blues, country and bluegrass band from the Wausau area. The event page doesn’t really have any more details than that but we included the link in case you want to add it to your Facebook calendar.
Fri.-Sun. July 8-10: Oh yeah, you didn’t think we forgot about Taste N’ Glow, right? Born out of a second cancelation of Balloon Rally and Rib Fest, the new balloon rally is in the town of Stettin and besides all the balloons and local vendors, this year the lumberjack competition will be televised on Fox Sports. Kind of a big deal! There’s so much here to talk about we couldn’t fit it all, but here is a link to their schedule over the three days. Sports
The Wausau Woodchucks ended the first half of the season with a win as the Chucks look toward the back half of the season. Andrew Armstrong pitched five shutout innings to help lead the Chucks past the Kalamazoo Growlers Monday. Wausau finished the first half 17-19. The Northwoods Leagues plays the season in two halves, and each counts toward the playoffs. The Chucks start a five-game homestand Thursday.
