Harvest Fest
Saturday, Oct. 4: I’ve come to call this time of year pumpkin spice season, for what should be obvious reasons. And the annual Harvest Fest downtown is a good marker of the start of that season, which includes a number of events this weekend. Bring the kids down to the 400 Block on Saturday to see those very satisfying rows of pumpkins, one of which children under 12 will receive for free, plus a petting zoo, kids activities and crafts, local food vendors and more. 11 am to 1 pm. See the event page for more.
Harvest Market
Saturday, Oct. 4: And by the way, you can make it a whole Harvest weekend, since there is also a Harvest Market planned at the Whalen Financial Group parking lot in Rib Mountain. Harvest yourself some goods from unique vendors such as The Whale Boutique, Motherdough Sourdough and Ivy and Ink Book Shop. 10 am to 2 pm. See the event page for a full list of vendors and more.
Old-Fashioned Harvest Fest
Sunday, Oct. 5: Oh and did you think the Harvest fun times were over? Dear reader, they are not. Willow Springs Garden is your destination on Sunday for all things harvest-related. Everything from crafts for the adults to bounce houses and face-painting for the kids, plus hay rides and corn mazes and everything else pumpkin spice themed that you can imagine will be on hand. To me this is the most harvesty of the harvest-themed events. 9 am to 4 pm. See the event page for more details.
Sip and Stroll Art Walk
Saturday, Oct. 4: It used to be called ExhibiTour, but now the event is called Sip and Stroll Art Walk. The premise, however, is the same: Grab a wine glass and traverse the downtown, checking out the area’s businesses, which become makeshift local art galleries. But it’s much more than wine - now the event features craft beer, hard seltzers and non-alcoholic beverages while still keeping the spirit of a great art-themed downtown event. 4-8 pm. $25 online, $30 at the event. Check-in and ticket purchase at Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art. Check out the event page for more details.
Adult Spelling Bee
Tuesday, Oct. 7: Think you’ve got the spelling chops to win a contest? Now’s your chance to prove it. The Marathon County Literacy Council is hosting this adult spelling bee as a fundraiser for a good cause to support literacy in Marathon County, but the competition is fierce with last year’s winners from GEM Learning Center looking for new challengers. With food and beverages provided by Texas Roadhouse and Lamb’s Fresh Market, this should be an evening at the Labor Temple to remember. $7, $10 at the event. Check out the event page for more and for tickets.
Howard Guitar Luedtke
Saturday, Oct. 4: Sometimes I forget that Howard “Guitar” Luedtke isn’t from Wausau, because he’s been such a staple of the Wausau music scene going way back to the old Scott Street Steak and Pub days (leave a comment if you were one of those OGs who went there!). Luedtke is a local blues-rock legend, and what a great chance to see him at one of Wausau’s great music venues, Malarkey’s Pub. 8 pm. See the event page for more.
Rev. Meantooth/Tom Jordan
Friday, Oct. 3: Speaking of blues rock, Rev. Meantooth (Tom Jordan from 20-Watt Tombstone) is absolutely the local heir apparent of this genre. Armed with a resonator guitar and a mean (sorry, had to) slide guitar style, Rev. Meantooth brings a perfect swampy blues-rock entry into the genre. He’ll make The Office bar his church on Friday, and he’s an act that’s always worth seeing. 7 pm. See the event page for more.
Jefferson Fosbender - Stadium Drive
Saturday, Oct. 4: This one is kind of unique - Jefferson Fosbender of the Iowa band Stadium Drive brings his talents to The Garage, which is now a real staple of the live music scene. Fosbender’s originals have a catchiness to them and it’ll be interesting to see what he does with the music as a solo artist. It’s a good chance to check out some original music in the area. 7 pm. Check the event page for more.
