Horseshoes and Hand Grenades at Stoney Acres | Wausome Weekend Guide
Wausau events for the week of May 28-June 4, 2025

Horseshoes and Hand Grenades
Thursday, May 29: Given the popularity of both Horseshoes and Hand Grenades and Stoney Acres Pizza, I gave you readers a heads up on this one ahead of time in our last edition. But it appears based on the ticket page and a very recent Facebook post from Stoney Acres that there are still tickets left. $49 gets you a night of Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, the Stevens Point bluegrass band that became a nationwide sensation, and all the Stoney Acres Pizza you can eat. Sounds like a deal to me. Check out the event page for more. Doors at 5 pm, opening band Buffalo Grass League with Hand-Picked Bluegrass at 6 pm and HHG kicks off at 7 pm.
One Night in Memphis
Wednesday, May 28: One of the coolest experiences of my childhood was visiting Sun Records in Memphis, where Elvis Presley, Conway Twitty, Roy Orbison and so many other rockabilly and country greats recorded their now-history tracks. One Night in Memphis is a tribute to some of those greats, including Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. This show brings a wealth of talent to the Grand Theater to bring these great artists and their music to life. 7:30 pm. $43-$58. Check out the event page for more.
Architectural Amble: Downtown Wausau
Thursday, May 29: I’m always up for a walk in historic places, so adding a good lesson in local history only adds to the fun. The group Friends of Wausau Historic Landmarks has been doing these walk-and-talks for awhile now, and this one in the downtown Wausau area will be narrated by historian and current city council member Gary Gisselman. Meet at the parking lot in 4th and Washington, and be prepared to walk a bit. 6 pm. See the event page for more.
Village Food Truck Night
Thursday, May 29: I thought it was interesting to give this one a quick shoutout - the village of Rib Mountain is hosting this event for folks to get information about their municipality as well as enjoy a range of food trucks that will be available at the village’s municipal center. I admit, I still have to remind myself to type “village” and not “town,” since that change is still pretty recent. Check out the event page for more.
Humane Society Run for their Lives
Saturday, May 31: I love animals. As in, keep me away from adoption posts on Facebook because I will definitely want to keep them all. So this event might be enough to get me wanting to run. For $30 you can participate in an event in which you can bring your bow-wow to run with, and support the Marathon County Humane Society. 8:30 am at Immanuel Baptist Church in Rib Mountain. See the event page for more.
COTS kickoff: Rising Phoenix
Wednesday, June 4: When the Concert on the Square series kicks off, you know it’s officially summer! (Ignore what the calendar says - the calendar makers don’t know about COTS yet). Kicking off the concerts is Rising Phoenix, but more importantly, you’ll now have a weekly excuse to meet up with your friends, drink a cold one or two and enjoy some music on a summer evening in downtown Wausau. 6 pm. See the event page for the rules and, eventually, what food vendors will be there. (As soon as they update it.)
Meet Craig Thompson
Thursday, May 29: A lot of people probably don’t know that Wausau has a couple of pretty famous comic book/graphic novel artists. There’s Tim Seeley (a high school friend) who is a pretty well-known comic book artist, and then there is Craig Thompson, probably best known for his award-winning graphic novel Blankets. The coming-of-age classic has art that just jumps off the page in its beauty and expression. His latest work, Ginseng Roots, is all about the history of Ginseng in Marathon County. Thompson grew up in Marathon and spent some time picking ginseng himself. I talked with him at the Ginseng Festival where he was doing research for this book, and he happened to be at a press conference with then-Governor Scott Walker around ginseng. So if you wanted your book signed and to meet him, heading over to Janke’s at 5 pm would be a good idea. See the event page for more.
Woodchucks Opening Day
Thursday, May 29: One of my favorite summers was the one I spent covering the Woodchucks for the Wausau Daily Herald. That included former Brewer and then Woodchucks Manager Jim Gantner once kicking me out of his dugout. It’s definitely one of my must-see events of the season, because there is nothing like a baseball game on a summer evening at Athletic Park. And with all the improvements owner Mark Macdonald has made to the stadium, it’s now a pretty comfortable one too. Stay tuned, as well, because the new softball team, The Ignite, will be kicking off June 10. See the event page for more on the Chucks’ opener. 5:05 pm.
Rugg
Saturday, May 31: I like jam bands. There, I said it. And Rugg, from central Wisconsin (could you be more specific?), is a pretty darned good one. They have the ability to take a pretty standard cover tune and turn it into a ten-minute jam session, which is great for live music. Check out a video on their Facebook page for the song “Mr. Charlie” for a good, bluesy example. 9 pm. See the event page for more.
