The village of Kronenwetter published a photocopy of a resident’s driver’s license in village board meeting materials.
The woman was an applicant for a bartending license, and her driver’s license appeared in the meeting materials freely available online right after her application.
The Wausonian discovered the license in the Oct. 26 meeting village board meeting packet after searching the meeting materials for something unrelated. The inclusion of someone’s actual driver’s license, which contains identifying information that could be used by a nefarious actor to steal their identity, raises legal questions under both federal and state laws.
The Wausonian on Wednesday sought more information on how the license came to be included in the packet materials and what would be done with it.
Village Clerk Connie Nowak, who joined the staff shortly before the meeting materials went out, responded promptly to The Wausonian’s queries.
Liability for Kronenwetter
The publication of someone’s driver’s license in the board packet raises two potential legal issues — one federal, and one state.
