Once per month, The Wausonian digs through the civil court filings in Marathon County to find the most interesting cases. It’s one of those Wausonian features that you only get here.

Jessica McCarthy worked for the Marathon City School Board, but according to the lawsuit, the board voted on Sept. 24 to terminate her employment contract.

The only problem? According to the suit, the board voted in closed session and did not vote in open session as required under state open meetings laws. A roll call vote was requested in open session, but the chair of the meeting refused, she alleges.

McCarthy in the suit asked the Marathon County District Attorney to review the case, who kicked it over to the Langlade County District Attorney. That DA declined to take up the case.

The lawsuit is asking a judge to nullify the actions taken by the board because she says they violated open meetings laws.

Also in this edition, a class action suit over a data breach at a law firm, an alleged cheese curd operation mishap, and more in our civil court cases this week.
