Riverfront Rendezvous
Thurs-Sat, July 3-5: Riverfront Rendezvous is one of those big, multi-day events that is a must do on many people’s summer fun list. There are bands galore, family activities and great food to be had, all along the Wisconsin River at one of the most scenic parks around, Pfiffner Pioneer Park. Not to mention fireworks and a pickleball tournament (over at Mead Park). Here is the three-day lineup on the main stage (See the event page for the full schedule of events).
Thursday: Fox Crossing (7 pm); Little Texas (9 pm).
Friday: The Blue Notes, ft Jay Stulo (11:30 am); Steez (3 pm); Armchair Boogie (7 pm); The Crown Jewels (9 pm).
Saturday: Crosstown Drive (Noon); Pegasis (3 pm); The Squeezettes (6 pm); Brass Differential (8 pm).
Fourth of July Fireworks
Friday, July 4: It’s back-to-back weekends for the Wausau Municipal Airport! This time it’s a round of fireworks at the airport to celebrate the nation’s founding. Wausau Events is hosting this free show at the airport. Gates open at 6 pm, with fireworks at 9:15 pm. Food vendors will be on site (no carry-ins), and fireworks go off rain or shine (only moved or cancelled in severe weather). Wausau Events advises visitors to pick up after themselves (and that includes in the adjoining neighborhood). See the event page for more.
COTS: Third Wheels
Wednesday, July 2: It’s another Concerts on the Square night! This time local band Third Wheels will take the stage at the 400 Block downtown, and hopefully for the band’s and everyone’s sake the weather will cooperate this time! Concerts run from 6-8 pm, no tables or pets, don’t set up blankets before 4 pm because it ruins the 400 Block grass. Rain location is typically the Rothschild Pavilion. Keep an eye on Wausau Events’ Facebook page for updated weather information. And learn more at the event page.
Brad on the Sand
Saturday, July 5: I’ve often thought a story on central Wisconsin’s hidden sandbar culture would be an interesting story. Some of the sandbars in the Wisconsin River/Lake Wausau become makeshift party spots, and that’s pretty neat! One of the cool events that happens every year is live music on a pontoon, and the main attraction is this annual Brad on the Sand feature. Everyone will be at the Pit Stop Sand Bar in the Lake DuBay area (sorry, there is no better way to describe this than the included map on the event page). Starts at noon.
The Tamaracks
Saturday, July 5: If you missed The Tamaracks at Stoney Acres Pizza the other night, now is another good excuse to catch them in town. This young Tomahawk band channels some old-school blues-rock influences such as ZZ Top and The Allman Brothers. And what better place to watch them do their thing than at The Garage, one of the Wausau area’s hot music venues. 7 pm. See the event page for more details.
Spicy Tie Band
Thursday, July 3: If you’ve never been to Tiki Beach Bar and Grill, you’re really missing something unique in central Wisconsin. The place becomes like a little tropical party spot in the middle of Wisconsin in the summer, and their live music experience is unlike anything else around. This Thursday they’ll welcome the Spicy Tie Band, the big party band with a big sound that has won multiple WAMI awards. You don’t have to go far to get that tiki party experience. 6:30 pm. See the event page for more.
Jerry Schmitt Band
Sunday, July 6: When it comes to country, Jerry Schmitt is one of those bands you might be surprised is based around here. Schmitt has done his time in Nashville as a recording artist, he’s had successful albums and he’s opened for the likes of The Oak Ridge Boys and Merle Haggard. Check him out at the Marathon City Sports Center at 4 pm. See the event page for more.
Dig Deep Duo
Sunday, July 7: I always love a good excuse to head up north to Sawmill Brewing Co. (Do we really need an excuse though?) The former DNR ranger station ended up making for one heck of a brewery. But if you needed an excuse, you could do worse than the Dig Deep Duo. Two of the members of the heavy metalers who formed a bluegrass band, Alex and Oscar, will leave you entertained while you down a pint or two. And that’s a good way to spend a Saturday. Plus, check out Lulu’s Food Truck while you’re there. 1-4 pm. (Food truck from noon-5 pm. See the event page for more.
