South Beach Up North: Classical Music at the Museum
Thursday, Aug. 7: This classic music chamber ensemble got its start in Miami in 1997, but they’ve had a tradition of playing up in the Northwoods in the summer (nice to get away from all that summer Florida heat!) to spread the word about classical music. They’ll be coming to the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum to play pieces by Hayden, Shostakovich and Chaminade. Free. 6 pm. Check out the event page for more.
Free Day of Play at the Imaginarium
Friday, Aug. 8: The Children’s Imaginarium was in the works for nearly a decade when it finally opened downtown - and the wait was worth it as families have flocked to the awesome indoors space that combines learning and play with a local twist. If your family has never checked it out, this partnership through Culver’s provides a free day to check out the Imaginarium, as well as free sample of Culver’s frozen custard while supplies last. 10 am. Check out the event page for more.
Jazz on the River: Point of Jazz
Sunday, Aug. 10: Jazz on the River is really the other summer concert series - it’s smaller, more chill and tucked away in Kickbusch Plaza (behind the river, by the library, and named after Wausau’s first mayor who had his store on the site back in the day). This week’s is Point of Jazz, a group comprised of graduates from UW-Stevens Point’s jazz program. Except everything from jazz standards to their own compositions. Free. 5 pm. Rain location: Malarkey’s Pub.
Line Dance Lessons
Saturday, Aug. 8: I think you’ve been scrolling your smartphone a little too much - time to get up and move! Come on down to Mosinee Brewing Company and check out the line dancing lessons from Wisconsin Country Style Dancers. Learn the ins and outs of dance and enjoy a few local brews in the process. $7. 6 pm. Alternatively, the Wisconsin Country Style Dancers will also hold a Monday session at 6 pm at Aftershock Bar ($5).
Tour d’ Briq’s
Saturday, Aug. 9: Let’s face it, if you’re going to ride a really long way on a bicycle, there ought to be two elements involved: Doing it for a good cause, and ice cream. Thankfully, the Tour d’ Briq’s has both! This event is a fundraiser for the Cycling Without Ages program, which spreads the love of cycling via trishaw rides so those who can’t bicycle on their own anymore can enjoy the joys of riding. Ride between two, three or four Briq’s locations (the distances get longer as the stops grow). This year’s ride leaves at Evergreen Elementary School instead of Aspirus Weston. $20 donation. Registration opens at 10:30 am, ride leaves at 11 am. See the event page discussion for routes and ride distances.
Music Bingo in the Beer Garden
Wednesday, Aug. 6: I like a creative spirit, and that’s why this new idea from Uncommon Pints caught my eye. Music Bingo doesn’t involve any letters or numbers - just listening to and identifying songs all night while you grab a few of the bar’s less common pints and fill out your bingo card while hanging out in their beer garden. 6 pm. See the event page for more.
Punk at Nevermore
Friday, Aug. 8: People were a little concerned about the implications for music when the longstanding P.I. closed down, but Nevermore on Third has more than kept the music flame going, including for you hardcore music fans. This punk show features American Progress out of Milwaukee, followed by Stevens Point hardcore band Lilac. The show closes with Wausau’s own Sunday Rebellion. If you like your music on the heavy side and stay up much later than I do, this is where you want to be Friday. 9:30 pm. 21+. See the event page for more.
