I’ve covered crime for some time, including as a beat writer when I worked at the Stevens Point Journal.

Those included a number of grisly murders.

There is usually passion or anger behind them. Jealously or getting an ex out of the way so someone can be with their lover. Or maybe someone is jealous of a new lover.

In other words, there is usually a reason.

But the exact reasons Dustin Stinson allegedly shot and killed Jacob Socha are tough to pin down. Domestic abuse of an unrelated woman seems to have been a factor, but all the connects aren’t yet clear. There seems to be some paranoia involved. Stinson’s telling hints at an accident, but the circumstances that put him in that position seem anything but.

The case defies easy answers or categorization.

Either way, this is what police investigators so far believe happened.
