The end of summer | Your Wausome Weekend Guide
Wausau area events for the week of Aug. 27-Sept. 3
Sponsored by
COTS: Hip Pocket
Wednesday, Aug. 27: This week is the very last Concert on the Square of the season. Summer went so fast! For this last week, Hip Pocket will close out the series with their blend of top 40, R&B, Latin, jazz and pop on Wausau’s big outdoor stage on the 400 Block. One last show and then it’s decorative gourd season. 6 pm. See the event page for the rules and what food vendors will be there. Rain location is the Rothschild Pavilion.
Free Water Ski Show
Thursday, Aug. 28: Yet another summer activity comes to an end. If you haven’t seen the Central Wisconsin Water Walkers all summer, this is your last chance! This season the Water Walkers developed a The Price is Right theme, which will make it extra unique and fun. The show is free, so head out to Lake DuBay (4480 Park Road, Mosinee) and enjoy some water ski fun. 6:30 pm. Check out the event page for more.
Movie in the Park: Minecraft
Thursday, Aug. 28: At this point it might be clear that the theme of this Wausome Weekend Guide is the end of summer. This too is the very last Movie in the Park - and it’s the Minecraft Movie! This live-action adaptation of the popular building game stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa and is a fun one for the kids. And it’s a good time to do it as it now gets dark earlier, making it easy to see the screen. 7 pm. Check out the event page for more details.
Jackpine Jamboree
Thurs-Sun, Aug. 28-31: If you’re looking for an excuse to get out of town and enjoy country/bluegrass music, this is your place. Hosted by long-time bluegrass band Sloppy Joe at the Wildlife Campground in Birnamwood, the event features music from Dig Deep, Art Stevenson, Kevin Troestler, the Low Crows, Gina Marie and the Golden Bucks, Moonshroom and more. Single-day tickets are $50; whole weekend pass is $125. Check out the full line-up and buy tickets at the event page.
Ribs, Wine and Barley Fest
Sunday, Aug. 31: The title might be Ribs, Wine and Barely Fest, but visitors to this event at Willow Springs Gardens will take a tour of the vineyard on site with a viticulturalist and learn how grapes become brandy. Yum! Participants can take the tour, participate in a beer and wine tasting, and enjoy a buffet for a little extra. Both come with a complementary beer or wine glass. 10 am to 4 pm. $25 for tour only, $35 with lunch buffet. Check out the event page for more details. Going on at the same time starting at 11 am is a Vintage Tractor Pull - an interesting choice to pair with a wine and beer fest.
Monthly Board Game Competition
Monday, Sept. 1: Not only did this monthly board game competition just recently come across my notice, but so did the venue for it. The Benevolent Badger opened earlier this year and the coffee shop features a monthly board game competition - for those who love board games, this is perfect! The actual game to be played is drawn that day. And that’s not the only gaming going on at the coffee shop - other board game nights and even Dungeons and Dragons events are held at the shop. If you’re into board games, be sure to check it out. 5 pm. Entry is the purchase of a drink or food item. Check out the event page for more.
St. Vincent de Paul Parking Lot Party
Friday, Aug. 29: Many of you probably know St. Vincent de Paul - or St. Vinnie’s, as many colloquially call it — as a good thrifting option. Others know some of the other good works they do. But an event venue? That one might be new, but that is what is happening this weekend as the organization seeks to hold a parking lot party. Not only will there be a store-wide sale, but there will be food trucks, a bake sale, kids games, Ashley scratch and dent deals and more. 11 am to 4 pm. Free, though food and other items for purchase will be available. Check out the event page for more details.
Oktoberfest Release Party
Friday, Aug. 29: It surprises me a little bit that this Oktoberfest release party starts at 2:30 pm, when the first pint will be poured. But maybe they’re counting on people taking Friday off as we head into Labor Day Weekend? Either way, join the fun at the former DNR ranger station turned into Sawmill Brewing Co. to try the new Oktoberfest beer, enjoy German food from WISH Food Truck, enjoy music from the Daydreamers and even participate in a stein holding contest. Seems like a great excuse to start the weekend a little early. 2:30 pm. See the event page for more.
Dandelion Delivery Service
Saturday, Aug. 30: One doesn’t necessarily need an excuse to visit the new Bull Falls Brewing Company biergarten - the new owners took this place to the next level with an outstanding outdoor taproom while the insides of the brewery are renovated. And that includes a new, large stage, which will make it a great place to view Dandelion Delivery Service. This fun bluegrass band is about to share the stage with Mike Clark and the Sugar Sounds (a Lamplight Sessions repeat performer) on its upcoming Colorado tour and the band features Ben Lila of Red Ben and the Missing Miles. Don’t miss them when they come to Bull Falls. 5:30 pm. Check out the event page for more.
