The Wausome Weekend: Fun things to do in Wausau this weekend
Blues Cafe, Matt Sayles, a tattoo pet fundraiser and much more
Welcome to a brand new feature of The Wausonian: The Wausome weekend event guide. To split up the Weekly Wausonian, which is increasingly getting too long for email, we decided to pull out the entertainment tab and beef it up a little.
Like it? Want it back the way it was? Let me know in the comments below. I will leave them open for all commenters, free and paid for this post.
Myth and Folly gallery Walk at Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum
Thursday, March 6: I personally love animals, so this exhibit sounds kind of cool: a variety of mediums and animals help bring the myths surrounding these critters to life, from the shape-shifting crow to the wise old owl. Join Amalia Wojciechowski for this free gallery walk around this fantastic exhibit. 6 pm. See the event page for more.
Mardi Gras Family Festival at Granite Peak
Fri-Sun, March 7-9: The theme on Granite Peak’s event page for this is beads, beads and more beads. And if you know Mardi Gras, you know how important beads are for the whole experience. Bring the whole family out to the ski hill: Friday night skiers and snowboarders will compete to see who wins the most beads; Ride the actual ski groomer with Mardi Gras King Kellen, collect from the 20,000 beads and enjoy fireworks at night; and just enjoy the slopes on Sunday. (Hopefully some of that Wednesday snow will help.) All the additional festivities outside of the groomer ride are free. See more on the event page.
Pets are Forever
Friday, March 7: As stated, I am an animal lover, so this one caught my attention. The Seven One Five Tattoo Collective is hosting a Pets are Forever event to help fundraise for the Marathon County Humane Society. The deal - get an animal tattoo from the list they provide for $100, and the proceeds go toward those animals in the shelter. Not a tattoo person? You can still participate and get a temporary tattoo with the same designs. 10 am to 5 pm. Find out more at the event page.
Yamato Drummers at the Grand Theater
Friday, March 7: As a nerd of all things Japan, I think this is one of the coolest performances to come to the Grand Theater. The group, which has been around 25 years now, sold out when they last came to the Grand in 2023. This collection of some of the best percussion performers in Japan is back and tickets are flying off the shelf. A truly energetic show that will leave you spellbound. 7:30 pm. Find out more at the event page.
Blues Cafe
Fri-Sat March 7-8: If you love the blues, you’ve probably already been waiting for this one. The Blues Cafe brings some truly incredible blues performers to town at the Rothschild Pavilion. (Becky Barksdale, who once toured with Michael Jackson and played in his Super Bowl performance, was one of my all-time favorites.) Besides the bands listed, Howard Guitar Luedtke will be playing acoustic sets between performers. $10 Friday only; $40 weekend (advanced); $45 at the door. Find tickets on the event page.
Here is the full line-up:
Friday: 6:30 pm — Mojo and Friends; 8:30 pm — Jay Edwards Band
Saturday: 2 pm — Dirty Red and the Soul Shakers; 4 pm — Brandon Santini Band; 6 pm — The Avey Grouws Band; 8 pm — Altered Five Blues Band

11:11 Fusion Yoga
Monday, March 10: The Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art has been hosting a number of events lately. And with the weather a little icky for outdoor events, it seemed like this yoga class was a great thing to highlight. The 11:11 yoga fusion class aims to harness the energy of 11:11 for “profound inner healing, spiritual activation and connection with the divine self.” Starts at 11:11 and ends at 12:12 pm. $15, bring a mat and water bottle. See the event page for more.
Matt Sayles
Saturday, March 8: Matt Sayles has some incredible chops. From Marquette, Mich, Sayles plays an incredible blend of country, bluegrass and blues and he’s shared billings with some of the greats including Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, Larry Sparks and more. Sayles’s show will be one you won’t want to miss. 8 pm. See more at the event page.
Don’t forget to let us know what you think about the new format!
