The Wausome Weekend | Your Wausau event guide
Bradley Sperger, a Vintage Disney Princess Tea Party, New Age Phonograph and so much more this weekend
Welcome to a brand new feature of The Wausonian: The Wausome Weekend event guide. To split up the Weekly Wausonian, which is increasingly getting too long for email, we decided to pull out the entertainment tab and beef it up a little. Use it as your guide to weekend fun and share it with your friends!
New Age Phonograph
Saturday, April 5: This act caught my eye. New Age Phonograph has an old-school vintage bluesy acoustic style with a singer who practically growls when he sings. The combination is a stunning act (and the video has an equally vintage look that matches the music perfectly). Check out the video for Wolf Howling at My Door to see what I mean. This two-piece act is based out of Oregon is worth checking out on their Wausau stop at The Intermission as they make their way through the Midwest. 7 pm. See the event page for more.
Gallery Huddle
Thursday, April 3: It might be something a little bit different than what regular attendees of the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum are used to, but this Gridiron exhibit is a good excuse to bring down someone who otherwise might not really be a museum-goer. The display has a number of historic football uniforms, from early college uniforms to those from various NFL eras. Join Woodson Director Matt Foss for a tour and talk of the exhibit. 6 pm. Free. See the event page for more.
Vintage Disney Princess Tea Party
Sunday, April 6: This is a popular event among families with young girls. How do I know? Because this event is also being held on Saturday, and it is sold out. Head on over to Willow Springs Garden and enjoy picture taking with Disney princesses, special themed cookies, lunch, and craft making. According to Willow Springs, this event has sold out for the past three years so you will probably want to book ahead of time. $15. Children 11 and under $8. 11:30 am. See the event page for tickets.
Bradley Sperger
Sunday, April 6: Bradley Sperger is especially skilled at the art of being a one-man band - it’s truly a joy to watch him build a song, adding each layer to the tune one piece at a time. His bluesy mixed with modern style is always a joy to listen to, and he has some great recordings to his name. Check out Sperger at The Garage, one of Wausau’s music hotspots. 1 pm. See the event page for more.
Ringapalooza
Saturday, April 5: The Q&Z Expo Center is known for bringing some bigger-name hard rock acts and even rap to the area, but this is an interesting turn of pace - they’re putting on a show for some of the local bands here. Notable Wausau punk band CASHED is joined by the Trash Pandas, Clinton J Miller, Zippnutts, Kimber Spirits, Joseph Chang and Bluezdriver. Come support some local music and some really talented musicians. 5 pm. See the event page for more.
Jerry Schmitt Band
Friday, April 4: It’s always nice to have an excuse to check out Mosinee Brewing Co. and grab a pop or two, but even better when you’ve got a country band to enjoy. Jerry Schmitt is a seasoned country musician and Nashville recording artist who blends modern and traditional country together with rockabilly to bring a driving, fun country style his fans love. He’s a Hodag Champion and tours events and festivals throughout the country. 7 pm. See the event page for more.
Bonus: And if you found yourself a little lost trying to dance on Friday, luckily for you there is a country dance lesson at Mosinee Brewing Co. the next evening. Put on by the Wisconsin Country Style Dancers, you’ll learn enough to have some moves at the next show. 7 pm. $7 per person. See the event page for more.
Looking ahead
The BoDeans
Thursday, April 10: If you’re a Wisconsinite and you know music (and heck, maybe even if you don’t), you know the BoDeans are one of Wisconsin’s most famous bands. The Waukesha group formed as Da BoDeans in the late 70s and really took off in the 1980s, touring with U2 during their Joshua Tree tour. So the BoDeans coming to the Grand Theater is a pretty big deal, and we put this one on early because from the looks of it tickets are already starting to sell fast and if we waited until next Tuesday, they would probably already be sold out. 7:30 pm. Check out the event page for more.
Libby DeCamp
Saturday, April 19: The good thing about Lamplight Sessions is also kind of a bummer - so many of their shows sell out which means they’re aren’t usually tickets available by the time we get to this preview. So, we’re trying to keep tabs on some of their shows ahead of time to give you guys a heads-up! And one you want to keep on your radar is Libby DeCamp. A returnee to Lamplight, Detroit-based DeCamp’s haunting, jazzy voice will knock your socks off. She’ll bring her full band for this one and be joined by Milwaukee experimental folk band Old Pup. 7 pm. See the event page for more.
Got some cool news to share about this column next week! In the meantime…
