Shooting victim dies, Everest sports dominates Valley, and other Wausau news
The victim of a shooting last month on Wausau’s West Side has died of his injuries, police say.
Police say Michael Turner, 45 of Wausau, shot another 45-year-old man while he sat in his green Pontiax Grand Prix parked in 1000 block of Fifth Street.
According to witnesses speaking with police investigators, Turner fired several times into the vehicle in which the man sat, turned to look at the two witnesses, then fired some more. Turner then drove off.
The man managed to drive his car to the Tobacco Outlet and asked for help, then returned to his car, where he bled as police arrived. They patched him up as best as they could waiting for paramedics to arrive.
Police announced the man died June 2 while in the hospital. Officials expect to modify Turner’s charges to first degree intentional homicide.

What else in Wausau?
A new program to help fill the lifeguard shortage at Wausau pools kicked off this week. The week-long training, it is hoped, will help fill the shortage that has left city pools unable to open full-time: Schulenburg and Memorial are closed two days per week and Kaiser is closed one.
The city has appointed a new fire chief. Robert Barteck, who had served as interim chief after past chief Tracey Kujawa retired in April, is now the department’s full-time chief. Barteck joined the department in 2019 as deputy chief.
No decision or further information has been released on NCHC CEO Michael Loy. Loy was placed on administrative leave two weeks ago with no explanation by the North Central Health Care board. Following a closed session meeting Thursday, the board decided to keep discussing the matter and otherwise provided no further information.
Police say someone is going to boat launches pretending to be a parks employee and demanding anyone who hasn’t paid the boat launch permit pay him $50 directly. Parks employees will drive official vehicles and will never ask for money directly. If you suspect something fishy, definitely call the police.

The Wreck Room is open in Weston now. The business allows users to smash things in a safe environment, having fun and relieving stress. The Wreck Room is located in the former hot dog restaurant on Bus. Hwy. 51. Check them out on Facebook.

The Short Pay Riders, based out of Wausau, released a single recently. Called Choke, it combines the scratchy, masculine Americana vocals of John Pearson with former Substyle guitarist Harold Melo on slide guitar and production, along with a supergroup of Wausau musicians. If you’re looking for a way to wile away a Sunday afternoon, Trail’s End will host its Music on the Deck 3 pm Sunday. Double Vision will play while you kick back a beer or two, or whatever your drink of choice is. Music on the Deck is a regular Sunday event and they have Max Koepke and Levi Ballenger… on deck.
What do plants and violins have in common? (Besides fiddleheads?) You can enjoy both as the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra plays the Monk Botanical Gardens 4 pm today (Thursday). It’s free and if you sign up for TDS internet service, you will get two free drink vouchers.
Sports
The D.C. Everest girls softball team finished its season with a loss: but held on to the top spot to remain conference champions. The Evergreens lost their last game to Wisconsin Rapids 5-2 Tuesday (which ended early because of the rain.
The Evergreens finished 10-2 on the season, just a game ahead of Rapids which finished 9-3. Through June 3, the Evergreens led as a team in batting and pitching, with a collective .402 batting average and a team earned run average of 1.92. Paige Kislow and Kiara Hammon held first (tie) and second with batting averages of .571 and .520 respectively.
Playoffs kick off Monday. As of press time, the WIAA brackets haven’t yet been completed.
In other sports
D.C. Everest girls soccer finished second in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, one game out to Rapids. The ‘Greens lost their last game to Rapids, giving the Raiders a one-game edge. Everest faced Wausau West in the first round of playoffs Wednesday, too late for Wausonian’s deadline.
Everest baseball was the top finisher of Wausau area schools in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, in third place. Everest boys tennis also finished third in the Valley, the top Wausau area school in the conference. Wausau West finished third in boys golf, the top Wausau school in the Valley Conference.
The Wisconsin Woodchucks are off to a banger of a start to the season, leading the Great Lakes West division by half a game. The Chucks have only lost two games and won six so far. They were leading the Green Bay Booyah 5-0 in the top of the fourth as The Wausonian went to publish. Outfielder Tyler Kehoe is leading the Chucks in batting with a .444 batting average, including 12 hits and two RBIs.
