Learn to Curl/Open House
Monday, Oct. 13: Wausau is blessed with one of the most epic curling centers in the region, if not the U.S. - and here is your chance to check it out. Let experienced club members walk you through the basics. As someone who has done it before, I can tell you curling will surprise you with how much fun it is. 6-8 pm. Just interested in seeing the club? Check out the open house on Saturday - for those who are just curious about the center and the sport but aren’t ready to try it, it’s a good way to do that without stepping on the ice. 11 am Saturday. See all the curling club’s upcoming events and more details here.
Candlelight concerts: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Hans Zimmer
Saturday, Oct. 11: St. Stephen Lutheran Church is once again hosting these well-regarded candlelight concerts. The first, starting at 6:30 pm, will see the Listeso String Quartet perform Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, along with some other selections; and at 8:30 pm, the Listeso String Quartet will perform many of Hans Zimmer’s best work, including music from the Lion King, A Dark Knight, Dune, the Wonder Woman Suite and much more. People have raved to me about these concerts so they’re definitely a good bet. $26 to $50. See ticket information in the links above.
Kids Market at Milltrim Farm
Saturday, Oct. 11: Having fun stuff to do with your kids in the fall is important - and this event at Milltrim Farms in Athens seems like a good excuse for a little mini-roadtrip. Bring the kids to enjoy an entire market centered on children, with food trucks, craft vendors, a corn maze, bounce houses and more from 10 am to 6 pm. Then in the evening, from 6-9 pm, enjoy live music, pizza and a beer tent on site. Check out the event page for more.
Empty Bowls
Sunday, Oct. 12: This annual fundraiser for The Neighbors’ Place has become a regular tradition for many folks in Wausau. Lately it’s been held at the Sundance Chalet at Granite Peak - so you get the scenic fall colors of Rib Mountain in the background. Taste local soups and pick up hand-crafted bowls - and now there is a soup flight option as well. Plus there will be family-friendly crafts and wheel-throwing demonstrations. Come on out and support this non-profit that ensures people in our community can eat. Noon-4 pm. Check out the event page for more details.
The Addams Family
Tues-Wed, Oct. 14-15: They’re creepy and they’re kooky, and now they’re making their way to the Grand Theater as part of this musical comedy! The Addams Family was one of those shows I remember watching as a kid with the knowledge that it was a show my parents watched when they were kids — that’s a cool shared experience. Big League Productions aims to bring this show to life on the stage, hot on the heels of the newer Addams Family spinoff on Netflix, Wednesday, and it promises to be as funny as it is altogether spooky. $84-$144. 7:30 pm Tuesday, 7 pm Wednesday. See the event page for more.
Fall Candlelight Hike at Council Grounds
Saturday, Oct. 11: While you theoretically could have a candlelight hike any time of year, in summer the daylight lasts too long, and in spring everything is mucky. That makes fall the perfect time of year, so it’s a good time to check out this Candlelight Hike at the Council Grounds in Merrill. Take a one-mile hike (or several) through the council grounds or on a separate paved path if you prefer, all softly lit by candles. Dogs are allowed as long as they’re leashed and well-behaved (especially in the dark around other people). You might want a flashlight or headlamp as well. Enjoy the fire afterward and bring your own S’mores or whatever else. $8 vehicle pass required to park. 6 pm. See the event page for more details.
Yas and the Jewelers EP release party
Friday, Oct. 10: I admit I hadn’t heard of Yas and the Jewelers before I saw this EP release party, but I am intrigued by this five-piece act out of Stevens Point. Bringing kind of a post-rock folk vibe, there isn’t a ton of samples of their music but what I did find seemed intriguing - Yasamin, the band’s lead, has a voice that punches above its weight, and lingers hauntingly over the band’s easy-going vibe. This short video on Facebook should give you an idea of their sound. This one is held at Downtown Bird, which is the same venue as Lamplight Sessions. 8 pm. More info and tickets at the event page.
Wausau Tropical Fish Swap
Saturday, Oct. 11: OK, so this one is a little niche, but I always find tropical fish fun to look at even if I don’t own any myself. And for those who are enthusiasts, here is a great chance to add to your aquarium! Besides plenty of tropical fish, plants, aquariums and supplies on hand, the full bar and grill will be at the ready for this event at the Wausau Eagles Club. 11 am-3 pm. Free. See the event page for more.
