The Wausome Weekend | Your Wausau event guide
Marielle Kraft, the return of a 2000s Wausau band, St. Patty's Day music and more for the weekend of March 13-19, 2025
Welcome to a brand new feature of The Wausonian: The Wausome Weekend event guide. To split up the Weekly Wausonian, which is increasingly getting too long for email, we decided to pull out the entertainment tab and beef it up a little. Let us know what you think!
Marielle Kraft
Thursday, March 13: Marielle Kraft is an up-and-coming pop star with fun instrumentation underneath her top 40 vocals. What only comes out in her live performance is her gift for storytelling that she weaves between songs. One of the more creative videos I watched of hers was created by Marielle sending 50 fans a toothbrush and having them film themselves singing along to her single “Toothbrush.” She has an expressiveness that deserves to be seen live. Kraft appears as part of the Grand Theater’s 10x10 series, which brings lesser-known up-and-coming artists to the grand at an affordable price. 7:30 pm. $10. See the event page for more.
Big, Big Furnace
Friday, March 14: Big, Big Furnace was a popular Wausau band from the early 2000s - and after two decades, they’re back! Big, Big Furnace is a power punk/emo band that gained a pretty big following in the early aughts, touring the Midwest, and now they’re bringing their high-energy, melodic act to Coral Lanes this Friday. The mix of power emo punk with horns makes for a really unique sound and an enjoyable listen. 8 pm. Free. See the event page for more.
Wisconsin Musky Expo
Fri-Sun, March 14-16: If you’re not a fisherman, you might not know that musky fishing is kind of its own category in the fishing world. People will tell you they’re going fishing, but those in the know will specifically tell you they are musky fishing. This expo at the Central Wisconsin Convention and Expo Center celebrates all that is musky fishing with vendors selling the latest gear, seminars with some of the area’s best musky experts and plenty more to keep musky enthusiasts occupied. $10 per day, $15 for two days or $20 for the weekend. More at the event page.
The Foxfire Affair
Monday, March 17: For those who celebrate, St. Patrick’s Day is Monday - and so Uncommon Pints has the perfect band for the occasion. The Foxfire Affair might only be two people, but this husband and wife duo are both masters of several instruments and they put on a full Celtic sound that needs to be seen to be believed. This lively Irish pub band will provide the perfect setting for lifting a pint of the uncommon variety on this St. Patrick’s Day at Uncommon Pints, which aims to feature beers from breweries that don’t always make their way to other pubs. 6 pm. See the event page for more.
Cyclones Division Playoff, game one
Friday, March 14: There’s nothing quite like a good hockey game - watching the players skate and bang into each other, it’s a uniquely graceful while at the same time rough sport. Fortunately for Wausonians Wausau’s newest hockey team, once called the RiverWolves, is now named the Wausau Cyclones, harkening back to an earlier Wausau hockey team. And they’ve had a fantastic season, finishing second place in the central division with a record 33-11-2-1, just behind West Bend Power. The Cyclones host game one of the series at Marathon Park Friday against the Rochester Grizzlies before heading to Rochester for game two. 7:10 pm. Find tickets at the Cyclones website. (And if necessary, game 3 will be at Marathon Park Sunday.)
Jackson Taylor
Sunday, March 16: Jackson Taylor is probably the perfect musician for a relaxing Sunday afternoon at The Garage. Born in Medford, Taylor calls Weston home while having a full tour schedule, taking him all around the state in the next few months. His style is a very top-40, singer-songwriter style of country that might sound familiar to those who listen to modern country. He counts country artists Jason Aldean, Riley Green and Canaan Smith among the main influences of his acoustic guitar-driven style. 1-4 pm. Check out the event page for more.
Also of note: Rucksack Revolution will play the Grand Theater March 15; The Wausau Conservatory of Music sold out its An Evening in Paris fundraiser Saturday, but the silent auction is available; and Guitarist Paolo Schianchi will play at Merrill Area High School Sunday (he’s known for playing a 49-string guitar that needs to be seen to be believed).
