Wausau’s New Big Weekend
Fri-Sun, June 27-29: Well, basically it’s Wausau’s new Big Weekend. To start off with, Wings over Wausau will take over the Wausau Municipal Airport running 4 pm-evening Friday and 11 am into the evening. The weekend’s events will feature evening airshows (8:45 pm) with fireworks on Saturday; a daytime airshow on Friday at 4 pm; plus pilot meet and greets, RC demonstrations, live music from Curious Crow Friday and Brady Ukert (day) and Hip Pocket (evening) on Saturday, and a Clear for Takeoff 5 k with registration at 7 am. See the event page for the full details.
And on Saturday and Sunday, the long-running Chalkfest will pepper the 400 Block downtown with chalk creations. It’s pretty incredible the level of talent that goes into these works! There are still some spots left if you’re an artist, but otherwise people tend to head downtown to watch the artists work on their chalk art. 8 am to 8 pm Saturday, 8-4 Sunday. Be sure to check out the event page for more details or to register.
Architecture Amble: Thomas Street Neighborhood
Thursday, June 26: Ever wanted to learn more about the history of a city neighborhood? These are a great way to do so. Join the Friends of Wausau Historic Landmarks for a jaunt around the history of the Thomas Street neighborhood, starting at Riverside Park, with special guest Tom Kilian. Kilian previously served the neighborhood on the Wausau City Council and also started Citizens for a Clean Wausau as he advocated for environmental cleanup of the neighborhood. 6 pm. See the event page for more.
NOTE: This event has been moved to Monday due to weather conditions. Otherwise all details remain unchanged.
Bird and Butterfly Walk
Saturday, June 28: Whether you’re a beginner birder or an old pro, this bird and butterfly walk ought to be a great option for you. The Mead Wildlife Center is a beautiful area with varied terrain. They’ll have some binoculars and bird books for you, or feel free to bring your own if you are indeed one of those seasoned birders. 9 am. See the event page for more details.
Wausau Whitewater Rec Release
Sat-Sun, June 28-29: These aren’t events, exactly, but they’re one of the things that help give Wausau its identity. Kayakers from around the region come for these recreation releases where the gates are open, creating a churning whitewater rapids course right in the middle of downtown. For the average Joe, they’re just fun to check out while the kayakers practice their turns, dips and even flips. Head on down to Whitewater Park on River Drive (right behind the Farmers Market) and see for yourself. 10 am-4 pm both days. See the event page for more.
Miller and Mike’s Comedy Juggling Show
Tuesday, July 1: This is a great one for the kids - Miller and Mike’s Comedy Juggling Show features two former clowns from Barnum and Bailey and Ringling Brothers, and they bring a high-energy, fun-packed show that will have your little ones transfixed. They’ll play 10:30 am at Oak Island Park and 1:30 pm at George Street Park in Rothschild. (Rain locations: Wausau Library and the Rothschild Village Hall, respectively.)
Weston Acoustic Concert Series: Christy Anna
Thursday, June 29: Either this is a brand new series or I just was not aware of it - but the village of Weston’s Machmueller Park has been playing host to this acoustic concert series. Up this week is Christy Anna, a classic country musician who also plays originals. 7-8:30 pm, bring your own chair and carry-ins. Check out the event page for more.
Luma Knotty
Sunday, June 29: The idea of a reggae band combined with rap might seem a little strange - but give it a listen and you will likely be a believer. This chilled-out reggae band has a real good groove to it, and seems like it would be perfect for a chill Sunday afternoon at Knowlton House. While you’re there you can sample one of their cocktails made with their spirits distilled right there on site. 11 am-2 pm. See the event page for more.
Sneezy
Friday, June 27: Jambase describes Sneezy as “Chicago’s new funk pranksters.” If you picture Ken Kesey’s Merry Band of Pranksters playing a smooth jazz version of funk, you’d have a pretty good idea what Sneezy is all about. It’s radio-friendly funk with an enigmatic lead singer reminiscent of a cross between Jack Black and Canned Heat’s Bob Hite, and his voice is perfect on top of this smooth, big-band funk sound. Malarkey’s is starting to get a mix of regional music talent, and this is a huge step in the right direction. 9 pm. See the event page for more.
In brief
The Northwoods Bassist is playing at The Garage 2 pm Sunday; Jake Ramsey will bring a pop-up show to the Lil Ole Winemaker Shoppe Thursday at 4 pm; Sage will play the Concerts on the Square at The 400 Block tonight (Wednesday); and The God Damn band will play Nevermore on Third at 9:30 pm along with Trash Pandas, Fangerlis and violinist Robin McDumphy.
Upcoming
Old Crow Medicine Show
Thursday, July 10: Even if you’re not really a bluegrass fan, I would be willing to bet you’ve heard Old Crow Medicine Show - their song Wagon Wheel is pretty hard to escape. This band got their start busking, and playing small shows. One day they played in front of a pharmacy and caught the attention of folk icon Doc Watson, who invited the band to play his festival MerleFest, and the band has never stopped since. Old Crow Medicine Show has two Grammys and has been inducted as members into the Grand Ole Opry. There are still a decent number of tickets left for this show at the Grand Theater, but they’re starting to dwindle and so are included in our upcoming section. 7:30 pm. $58-$98. Check out the event page for more.
