Young Original
Wednesday, Sept. 10: If you pull up Young Original’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert, the band’s appearance might surprise you. They look like they would be a young rock band, but then they pull out their cello, acoustic guitar, mandolin and piano and what you get is mellow and original. This band formed in 2022 and is already touring the country, having played at Nashville’s Rudy’s Jazz Room and the Claremont Hotel in Maine. Come see their blend of jazz, folk, pop and classical as part of Merrill Area Concert Association’s series. Adult season tickets are $60 per year, $20 for students (18 and younger). 7 pm. Merrill High School Auditorium. See the website for more details.
Sunday Corn Maze
Sunday, Sept. 14: It’s decorative gourd season… well, if you know the reference, you can add the rest yourself. This is a family publication. (Sort of.) But either way it’s the season for pumpkin patches and corn mazes and all the wonderful fall pumpkin spice stuff to fill up your weekends. Visit Sophie’s Pumpkin Patch and enjoy a 12-acre corn maze, something called “the slingshot,” yard games, a bouncy house and more. Great place to take the kiddos. $12 13 and up, $9 ages 4-12. 10 am-7 pm. Runs through the end of October. See the event page for more.
Food Trucks in the Park
Thursday, Sept. 11: Parks are great, but so are food trucks. So why choose? Thankfully you won’t have to with Rib Mountain’s Food Trucks in the Park event. Come on down to Doepke Park and check out the nearly dozen food trucks in attendance. From C.O.W. cheese curds to Mitch’s Texas Tacos to Geno’s Bake Shoppe, there are plenty of options to choose from while also participating in a 9/11 Memorial Walk. 4-8 pm. Free, but you will need to buy food from the food trucks. Check out the event page for more details.
Rec Release
Sat-Sun, Sept. 13-14: To my surprise, it’s not the last Rec Release weekend - there is one more at the end of the month - but the season is coming to a close. If you’re a whitewater kayaker, you probably already know about these weekends when they unleash the rapids right at Whitewater Park in downtown Wausau for you tricky kayakers to navigate. And for everyone else, it’s fun to sit in the stands and watch. My recommendation: grab yourself some goodies at the nearby farmers market on Saturday, or maybe a coffee or other treat from downtown and watch the kayakers do their thing. 10 am-4 pm. See more details at the event page.
Your Own Knife, Sweetalk and Fun in Theory
Friday, Sept. 12: If angry, screaming type of vocals are your forte, than this is the show for you. Your Own Knife is coming all the way from Nebraska for this show, and they’ll be joined by Green Bay’s Sweettalk and Fun in Theory for a night of screaming hardcore fun in Wausau’s gothic paradise, Nevermore on Third. 9:30 pm. Check out the event page for more.
New Jobs on the Block
Thursday, Sept. 11: First off, I love the reference to the boy band of my childhood. But second, what a great way to connect employers and employees! Job seekers can stop on down to the 400 Block and find plenty of employers who are looking for workers. And if you’re an employer yourself, you might be able to still register Wednesday, but you’d better hurry. 11-3 pm. Free for job seekers, $55 for employers. See the event page for details and registration for employers.
Flute Loops Concert
Saturday, Sept. 13: All controversies from last year aside, the Monk Gardens is a wonderful area to enjoy and this concert is a good excuse to go check it out if you haven’t in a while. Monk Botanical Gardens is hosting Flute Loops, a group of local musicians that will play while you enjoy a picnic in the gardens. Bring your own food; drinks are sold on site and that supports the gardens. 6 pm. $5, additional donations via cash or Venmo accepted. See the event page for more.
The Icarus Account
Thursday, Sept. 11: The Icarus Account is a Florida-based band comprised of twin brothers, Ty and Trey Turner, who have been playing and performing since 2006. Theirs is a light pop-rock and it’s taken them around the world. Their song “Favorite Girl” was featured by Snapchat for its 2012 Valentine’s Day promotion. Several of their songs have charted on iTunes. They’re playing at Homestead as part of a benefit for Wausau attorney Sarah Ruffi, who is battling brain tumors. Contributions from the event will go toward Ruffi’s medical bills. The event includes catering by El Tequila Salsa. 4 pm, The Icarus Account at 7 pm. See the event page for full details.
