Your Wausome Weekend Guide
Candlelight concerts, a pickle party, the Allen Brothers, a coin show and more Wausau nightlife this weekend
Welcome to a brand new feature of The Wausonian: The Wausome Weekend event guide. We happen to think there are a lot of cool things to do in the Wausau area on any given weekend, and so every week we put together this guide for you. Use it as your guide to weekend fun and Wausau nightlife, and share it with your friends!
Candlelight shows: Imagine Dragons vs Coldplay, Adele
Saturday, April 26: Right now there appear to be tickets available for both of these shows, which are back to backon the same night; but these candlelight shows at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church sell out remarkably fast. In the first show starting at 6:30 pm, watch the Listeso String Quartet play the greatest songs of Millennial powerhouse Adele; and at 8:30 pm watch that same quartet play Imagine Dragons vs Coldplay, interweaving songs between the two. The candlelight ambiance they create for these shows is pure magic. $33-$54.50 each (they’re separate ticketed events). See the page for the Adele show here, and the Coldplay vs Imagine Dragons here.
Street Corner Symphony
Saturday, April 26: You might not think of Merrill as a concert powerhouse, but these Merrill Area Concert Association shows bring some pretty good acts to the city north of Wausau. And this one with Street Corner Symphony is no exception. The group was a runner-up on the NBC show The Sing-Off in 2010. This Tennessee-based a cappella group can somehow manage to pull off a variety of styles, weaving between them flawlessly. Come see what all the fuss is about. 7 pm. Season tickets are $60 for adults, $20 for students and $130 for families. See the event organizer’s site for more.
Wisconsin Valley Coin Club Annual Show
Sunday, April 27: Honestly, I think way too much fandom is online and the people who love these hobbies don’t meet up in person enough. So I like highlighting events such as this coin show from the Wisconsin Valley Coin Club at the Holiday Inn in Rothschild. It’s a chance to browse coins, ask people questions, and learn a little history through coins while perhaps adding to your collection. Plus there are raffles and games for the kids so you can bring the fam. 9 am to 4 pm. See more at the event page.
Pickle Party
Saturday, April 26: Every once in a while an event name really pops out, because it makes you say to yourself, “Wait, what is that?” Glass and Grain House already has a pretty unique premise: combine high quality beer with a dessert menu, all in a venue that has a very 70s basement vibe to it. Sold! But this event takes things a step further by celebrating all things pickle. Check out brined lagers, pickle beers and even fruity pickle beers. 2-11 pm. Check out the event page for more.
The (original) Charleston
Saturday, April 26: Back in the 1920s, before the age of the viral social media app TikTok, the dance The Charleston spread like wildfire throughout the country, including Wausau. But the dance was inspired by a major jazz standard of the same name. Join Marathon County Historical Society Archivist Ben Clark as he takes you through the history of this song, the many recordings made of it and how people in the 20s thought about music. 2 pm at the Woodson History Center. See the event page for more.
The Allen Brothers
Saturday, April 26: What happens when you combine decades of experience with some of the greatest hits of the 80s, 90s and today? Bob Allen and his brother Brandon are both talented musicians (guitar and drums, respectively) and joined by bass powerhouse Wade Kaiser make up this dynamic trio that will have you on your feet dancing at The Garage in Rib Mountain. 7 pm. Check out the event page for more.
The Chad O’Kennedy
Friday, April 25: Many Wausau music fans probably know Chad O’Brien as the lead singer of punk band CASHED, but he also has another persona called The Chad O’Kennedy. As The Chad O’Kennedy he plays mellower acoustic tunes, which his melodic, scratchy-edged voice works really well for. The Chad O’Kennedy headlines this show at Nevermore on Third with The Last Sip of Beer and Kimber Spirits. All in the cool, gothic vibes of Nevermore. 9 pm. Check out the event page for more.
Upcoming
Marty Stuart
Friday, May 2: Marty Stuart is a country music legend, and so it’s perhaps no surprise that this show is already really getting close to selling out. Stuart got his start at an early age with some of the biggest country music stars. At age 13, he joined bluegrass legend Lester Flatts’ band and toured with big names such as Johnny Cash. But Stuart was too good to not be recognized as a star in his own right, and his 40 years performing and recording on his own has yielded five Grammys, a spot in the Country Hall of Fame and an AMA Lifetime Achievement. 7:30 pm. $36-$63. Check out the event page for tickets.
As a member of the Wisconsin Valley Coin Club, my husband and I want to send you many thanks for including this weekends Coin Show in the Wausome Weekend Guide😊
