Riverdance 30
Wed-Thurs, May 14-15: I remember working at Target when the Riverdance videotapes (yeah, I know) were flying off the shelves. Tickets to this energetic performance blending technology and traditional Irish-style dancing are similarly flying off the shelf, but there are still a few tickets available for both these shows. This recent season is the first for a whole new generation, meaning the performers currently involved weren’t even born when Riverdance first started. 7:30 pm. $70-$200. Check out the event page to see for yourself.
Myth Making: Tabletop Role-playing
Saturday, May 17: OK, this one is really cool. As part of the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s latest exhibit, Myth and Folly, the museum is hosting this day of tabletop gaming. Join a number of different one-off Dungeons and Dragons sessions aimed at beginner and intermediate players, with different themes. If you’ve ever wanted to try this unique experience, this is a great opportunity to do so. 1-4 pm. Free, make sure to register at the link.
It Happened at the Park
Sunday, May 18: One of the things you see in places such as Door County are various themed bus tours - they’re often built around local crime history or ghosts. Wausau is trying its own here, and this one is around the city’s parks. Starting at Granite Peak, participants will listen to stories about the city’s parks and their history for about two hours, returning to Granite Peak for a reception. $25, tickets are available at Janke’s Book Store by cash or check. Noon. See the event page here.
Spokes and Seltzers
Friday, May 16: When I first moved to Wausau, I started a group called Bike Fun Wausau, in which I led fun bike rides with the aim of getting around and doing fun things. This one seems similar to that spirit - Bike Wausau is hosting this Spokes and Seltzer ride starting at the 400 Block in Wausau. Participants will join a short, conversational-level ride (30-45 min.) and then park their bikes at the 400 Block racks and head to Forward Beverage for a non-alcoholic drink. Ride leaves at 6:30 pm. Check out the event page for more.
Armed Forces Day at Wausau Airport
Saturday, May 17: Armed Forces Day is an important holiday on the national calendar, and the Wausau Airport is set to host this event to commemorate the occasion. Enjoy an IronBull Youth Run, a pancake breakfast by the Kiwanis, a live U.S. Navy Band performance, see the military plane collection (including my favorite the B-25 Mitchell Bomber), flight simulators, food trucks and more. 8 am-4 pm, free though bring money for the food trucks or pancake breakfast. See the event page for more details.
Brewery Comedy Tour
Saturday, May 17: One of the unfortunate things about the Brewery Comedy Tour is you never know exactly who is coming, so it’s tough for me to sell the event based on the headlining comedian. But what I will tell you is that the comedians they get for this tend to be top-notch - some of the funniest touring comics in the nation. Grab one of Mosinee Brewing Co.’s award-winning beers and get ready to laugh your socks off. 8 pm. $17.85, prices increase closer to the event. See the event page for more.
Mia Brown
Wednesday, May 14: Wednesday night doesn’t always have a lot going on but that’s not the case this Wednesday as Venado hosts Mia Brown. The Wausau-native Brown has a powerful voice and is signed to a Nashville recording label so it’s always worth giving her a listen when she’s in town. 6 pm. See the event page for more.
Upcoming
Joe Kaplow w/ Sleeping Jesus
Saturday, June 14: Pretty much every show at Lamplight Sessions is going to make this list - because they rarely if ever fail to sell out. Joe Kaplow’s is a vintage folk sound, with the kind of songwriting that makes you feel chill but has interesting harmonies and sounds swirling beneath the surface. Think of a bluegrass aesthetic with modern recording and layer capabilities that make it transcend the genre. Sleeping Jesus has a modern indie pop groove that’s laid back and breezy. 7 pm. Check out the event page for tickets.
Horseshoes and Hand Grenades
Thursday, May 29: It’s been something to see Horseshoes and Hand Grenades go from playing house shows in Stevens Point, to regularly taking the stage at Central Waters events, to being nationally famous. It’s always a treat when they come back to town, and this regular appearance at Stoney Acres Farm is always one to keep on your calendar. With this one, your $49 ticket includes all-you-can-eat Stoney Acres Pizza (which I could eat more than $49 worth of if pressed) and opening act Buffalo Grass League featuring Hand-Picked Bluegrass. Opening act at 6 pm, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades play 7-10 pm. Camping available. See the event page for details and tickets.
