Taste N Glow Balloon Fest
Fri-Sat, July 11-12: It used to be part of Wausau’s Big Weekend - now it’s its own thing! How about we call it Balloon Weekend? Taste N’ Glow is back for another year out in the town of Stettin, a great place for large, well-attended events. Think beautiful balloon displays, lumberjack shows, live music, local food, kids activities, a car show and more at this great annual show. 11 am-10 pm Friday, 6 am-10 pm Saturday. See the event page for the full schedule of events.
Old Crow Medicine Show
Thursday, July 10: Even if you’re not really a bluegrass fan, I would be willing to bet you’ve heard Old Crow Medicine Show - their song Wagon Wheel is pretty hard to escape. This band got their start busking and playing small shows. One day they played in front of a pharmacy and caught the attention of folk icon Doc Watson, who invited the band to play his festival, MerleFest, and the band has never stopped since. Old Crow Medicine Show has two Grammys and has been inducted as members into the Grand Ole Opry. 7:30 pm. $58-$98. Check out the event page for more.
Funkyard Dealers
Saturday, July 12: The Funkyard Dealers are the kind of band that would be great on The 400 Block stage for a Concert on the Square: Fresh, original tunes but still located in the vicinity of Wausau. This original funk group from Stevens Point packs a punch, has three albums to its name and is a guaranteed good show. Check them out at Malarkey’s Pub, which is ramping up its live music offerings again. And now you can grab a bite to eat at Mumblewrap next door. 9 pm. See the event page for more.
Leanna Crawford
Tuesday, July 15: Leanna Crawford coming to the 400 Block is kind of a big deal - she just launched her debut major label studio album on Sony, and is quickly making her way up the Christian music charts. For those who like Christian music, or just want to see an up and coming major label artist with a great voice, this is a show you won’t want to miss. 6 pm. Free. Check out the event page for more.
Tom Pease
Mon-Tues, July 14-15: Children in the Wausau area were probably sad in June when Tom Pease had to postpone his shows - but now he’s back on the books! Children’s entertainer Tom Pease has been around for a long time, entertaining children and now children of those children. Pease is a master at entertaining children, full of expression and joy that gets kids up and moving. Now there will be four options to see Pease, depending on where you live. Pease will be at George Street Park in Rothschild at 10:30 am Monday; 1:30 pm Monday at the Hatley Library; and at Oak Island Park at 10:30 am; and at River Park in Mosinee at 1:30 pm Tuesday.
Miss Myra and the Moonshiners
Friday, July 11: Older styles of music are coming back, but you don’t see a lot of big-band swing era music amongst younger musicians. Miss Myra and the Moonshiners flip that notion on its head. This five-piece act has the swing era style down, both in look and in the music, and you’ll get a kick out of their swing style. Enjoy their sound with the backdrop of Stoney Acres Farm with a slice of pizza and a beer made right on site. Music runs 5-8 pm. Check out the event page for more details.
In brief
Jake Ramsey at Nevermore (Sunday, 4 pm); Reverend Meantooth at the Office Bar (Friday, 7 pm); Movie in the Park: Wild Robot at the 400 Block (Thursday, 7 pm); Inferred Band at the Concerts on the Square (Wednesday, 6 pm).
Upcoming
Chris Acker and the Growing Boys
Friday, Sept. 26: It’s pretty rare that a show at Lamplight Sessions doesn’t sell out. That (and some of the Grand Theater shows) is the reason we created the upcoming section so you could find out about some of these shows with enough time to get tickets. What’s he sound like? It’s a good mix of country and folk — think a country beat and lap steel, mixed with a folk vocal style. 7 pm. Check out the event page for tickets.
